Overview

From 1 April 2024 we are proposing to make changes to our Council Tax Local Discounts & Premiums Policy to encourage owners to bring long-term empty properties and second homes back into use:

 

Current Policy

Proposed Policy

A

100% discount on substantially unfurnished properties for 6 months

100% discount on substantially unfurnished properties for 3 months

B

0% discount on substantially unfurnished properties for 6-24 months

0% discount on substantially unfurnished properties for 3-24 months

C

N/A – new legislation

Introduction of a new discretionary Council Tax premium on second homes of up to 100% from 1 April 2025

D

N/A – new legislation

Amend the period after which a long-term empty period applies from 2 years to 1 year from 1 April 2024
